Mona Smith, 77, of Indianapolis most recently Greenwood, passed away on Saturday October 21st at home surrounded by family.  She is preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Leland Smith and her sister.

Mona was a retired registered nurse.  She began her nursing career in 1960 as a pediatric nurse.  She spent much of her career at Riley Children’s Hospital until her retirement in 1999. Mona was also very active in church, and a longtime member of Southport Heights Christian Church.  She was on the Missions Committee, and traveled to Africa, India, and Haiti where she was able to use her nursing skills in clinics there.

She had a love for service to others and always was the first to reach out to someone in need.  Mona loved supporting Holt International (a ministry to orphans) and La Leche League.  She was a Girl Scout leader and volunteered at her children’s schools.  She loved reading, gardening, and music.  Mona had a sharp sense of humor and a knack for telling stories that captured one’s attention.

She was a wonderful mother and grandmother.  Mona is survived by her three children:  David (Kathy) Smith, Angelie Ryah, and Leann Beckner; six grandchildren: Lisa Smith, Andrea Smith, David (Bobbi) Smith, Jordan Beckner, Cameron Beckner and Nicholas Beckner; one great-grandchild and three step-great grandchildren.
