Ted Spurgeon, Sr. Obituary

Ted LeRoy Spurgeon Sr. passed away on May 11, 2023, at the age of 80.  He was born October 1, 1942, in Indianapolis to the late William and Dorothy Spurgeon.

While growing up in Drexel Gardens, he met his childhood sweetheart who later became his wife of 51 years, Cheri Spurgeon.  Cheri often shared with friends that she was going to marry Ted someday.

While attending Ben Davis High School, Ted was well known for his speed, holding track records in the 100, 200, 400 Relay, and Long Jump.  After high school, Ted served in the United States Army where he was decorated with the National Defense Service Medal and as a sharpshooter with a rifle.

Later, he continued to stay active bowling with friends, relic hunting in the corn fields of rural Indiana, and playing a lot of softball as a pitcher with friends and with many of the kids he coached in Little League Baseball.   Ted and Cheri also spent many summers camping in Brown County and other parks with their South Wayne baseball family.  Ted loved hiking and nature in general.  He was a protector of all animals big and small.

Ted was well known for his quick humor and little pranks.  He loved to make people laugh.  It was very common to be a little sore from laughter after spending time with “Big Ted”.

Ted is survived by his son Ted (Tanya) Spurgeon Jr; brother Gary (Bonnie) Spurgeon, sister Carol Dill  (Bob Poore); grandchildren, William, Zachary, and Nicholas Spurgeon He was preceded in death by his wife, Cheri Sue Spurgeon.
