James Miller Obituary

James Miles Miller, Jas Miles in the phonebook, Big D to those close to him, and Jim to all, passed peacefully at home on January 22, 2023, surrounded by family. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Eileen (née O’Day); his children Timothy John Miller (Joan), Nancy Miller Locke (Twig), Jack Matthew Miller (Elizabeth), Alan Mark Miller (Danyelle), and Thomas Luke Miller; his siblings Richard J. and Myra Kay; his grandchildren Jennifer, Amy, Sally, Timothy, Ryan, Lacey, Jillian, Jack, Benjamin, Luther, A.J., and Bruno. He was preceded in death by his parents Dr. Richard and Mary Miller. Born in Fort Wayne on June 1, 1935, the second child of Dr. Richard Henry and Mary Elizabeth (née Calbeck), Jim was a 1953 graduate of South Side High School where he captained the Archer net squad to tennis dominance winning the City Trophy his senior year. It was during those Fort Wayne days that he met and fell in love with Eileen Mary O’Day. The two were married December 29, 1956, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. After moving to Indianapolis to attend Butler University, Jim gave the balance of his long life to building and supporting his family with Emo (Eileen). The Miller clan became staples of the Meridian Kessler neighborhood – parishioners at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish and members at the Riviera Club where Big D continued to smash forehands and pass his tennis skills on to his children and grandchildren. They raised five beautiful and successful children; those children have gone on to raise families of their own – Big D an integral part of each and every one of their lives. Jim spent time during his early career as a buyer for Danner’s and Ayr-Way. He went on to successfully shepherd businesses related to medical building construction operations with his sons Timothy and Thomas. He served as chief spotter and an integral member of the professional racing career of his second son, Dr. Jack. He leaves behind his love for life, his legacy of always finding the right thing to say to add levity where/when it was needed and a big, wonderful, close family that will continue to thrive because of Big D. We love you, will miss you, and are proud to be the things you cared most about in this world. A celebration of life will be held at Woodland Country Club (100 Woodland Lane, Carmel, IN 46032) on Saturday, February 4, 2023, from 1:00pm to 3:00pm. Final Care and arrangements by Singleton Community Mortuary and Memorial Center, 1202 South Lynhurst Drive, Indianapolis, Indiana 46241.
