Mr. George Edward Whitsit, of Greenwood, passed away on the evening of Sunday, April 26, 2020 at his residence. He was 86. George was born August 25, 1933 in Beech Grove, Indiana, a son of the late Lester and Blanche (Smith) Whitsit.
George attended Arsenal Technical High School and was a member of the graduating Class of 1952. He was also a long-time member of the Southport Presbyterian Church where he served as an Elder and also participated in the Center Stage Productions at the church for 10 years, serving on the Board and assisting with theatrical productions. George’s love for flowers and gardening led to the founding of Flowers by George in 1959 and was it’s owner and operator for nearly 50 years, retiring in 2008. He also enjoyed traveling. He and his wife, Joy, literally circled the globe serving on several mission trips over the years.
George is survived by his wife of 60 years, Joy (Holmes) Whitsit; his daughters, Julie Whitsit and Leslie (Dave) Roycraft; a son-like friend, Peter Wood; his grandson, Connor Roycraft; his siblings, Richard Whitsit and Mary Alms as well as several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in passing by his parents.
A private graveside service will be held with inurnment following at Orchard Hill Cemetery in Wanamaker, Indiana.
A public memorial service will be held in June at the Southport Presbyterian Church.
