Delbert (Gene) E. McWilliams
March 24, 1941 – November 11, 2018

Gene McWilliams of Indianapolis was called home on November 11, 2018 after a peaceful passing. He is preceded in death by his parents, D.C. and Margaret McWilliams and brothers, Bob and Steve. Gene graduated from Ben Davis H.S. in 1959 and received a full scholarship to Georgetown College for Track and Field, where he excelled and still holds records in multiple events. He was inducted into The Georgetown Athletic Hall of Fame in 2012.Gene took many roles in life, beginning as a lifeguard for numerous years for the Indiana State Parks and the Westlake Beach Club. An avid historian, he enjoyed teaching and coaching for the Northwest Hendricks County school district, and even attended the funeral of President John F. Kennedy.

Through the years, Gene enjoyed personally serving a loyal client base of Gene McWilliams Windows alongside his other endeavors. A former Court Bailiff for several judges and management for the Indianapolis City Government, Gene retired in 2015 as a Sargent from the Marion County Sheriff’s Department.

Gene was active in local politics, serving as both a Precinct Committeeman and Ward Chairman. He was a spokesperson for Protect the Innocent and a board member and dedicated current member of University Heights United Methodist Church. Gene enjoyed reading, sports, listening to Elvis and was a very skillful cook, never missing an opportunity to share his love of cooking with his friends and family. Gene was happiest around those he loved, and will be remembered for his outrageous humor, his gift for storytelling and playing his harmonicas.

Gene will be deeply missed by his wife of 37 years, Anna, daughter, Cindy Olivier, sons, Kevin (Jami), Darren (Lindsay), Brian (Liz) and Steve, sisters, Judy Stephans and Debbie (Jeff) Wilson, grandchildren, Maddie, Kaitlyn, Brooke and Brian, and his many nieces and nephews.

We express our sincere gratitude to I.U. Health Hospice nurses, Nancy and Jen, for their compassion and support.
Visitation will take place at Singleton Community Mortuary and Memorial Center, 7602 Madison Ave., Friday, November 16, 2018 4:00 – 8:00 p.m.

A celebration of Gene’s life will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 17, 2018 following a brief showing from 9:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. at University Heights United Methodist Church, 4002 Otterbein Ave., Indianapolis by Pastor David Neuen. Gene will be laid to rest at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens Chapel, Greenwood.

Words can never do justice to moments like these. It is never easy to lose a personality like the ones in the McWilliams family. I am thinking of you all and if you should need anything from me just say it.

I worked with Gene while he was with Sheriff. I will remember Gene as being very kind and always having a joke, usually which side of the table to sit on if we wanted to be in the picture. He will be missed. Prayers for his family.

Gene was such a part of my childhood and as a young adult. When he spent a few days in
the summers at his grandmother, Aunt Kate, he and I spent a lot of time together. My husband Hans and I would get together with Gene and Sandy, Kevin and Cindy, trading weekends at a hotel on hers homes. Over the years as often happens, we all just got busy in our lives and lost contact. My heart is filled with memories and love for the MCWilliams family. Hugs and prayers!

Gene is certainly going to be missed by all his Kappa Alpha Brothers at Georgetown College. His personality, quick humor and outstanding athletic abilities will go unmatched. He has been my friend and neighbor growing up in Ben Davis. In college we are fraternity brothers. Rest in peace old friend.
