Thelma Doris (Jackson) Lesniak, 96, passed from this life on Thursday, May 31, at Greenwood Village South in Greenwood, Indiana.   Thelma was born March 23, 1922 in Myrtle Creek, Oregon.  She was the fourth of six children born to Oscar and May Jackson.  Thelma attended a one-room schoolhouse in Myrtle Creek before her family moved to Michigan and then to Indiana, where Thelma graduated from Rensselaer High School in 1941.

While in Rensselaer, Thelma worked for Hadley Hatchery doing many jobs, from bookkeeper to unloading chicks from the incubators.  And, it was there, in Jasper County, Indiana, that Thelma met the love of her life, Bernard L. (Bernie) Lesniak, in February 1948, and they were married six months later on August 29.   Bernie has been Thelma’s loving partner for these last 70 years and was at her side as she took her final breath on Earth.

Bernie and Thelma had an extraordinary marriage and immensely enjoyed their time together, including sharing several hobbies such as fishing, golfing, bowling and playing cards.  They were longtime members of Christ United Methodist Church.   Bernie and Thelma also enjoyed many vacations together, frequently with family members.  In fact, many great memories were later made as the family gathered to watch slide shows documenting their magnificent trips, which totaled 55,000 miles by car in the US and Canada.

Thelma was one of the kindest human beings God has ever placed on Earth.  She was warm and welcoming to everyone.  People who knew and loved her will always remember her sweet smile, generous words, and affectionate pats on the hand.  She loved children and delighted in holding babies.   Thelma’s spirit was loving and gentle, and she will be deeply missed.

Thelma is survived by her husband Bernie; sisters Wanda Gilbert of Monon, IN and Loretta Tanner (Walter) of Medford, OR; three children Karen Hadley (Dennis) of Lakeland, FL, Janice Lesniak (Rob Smith) of Indianapolis, and Wayne Lesniak (Vanessa) of Carmel, IN; and seven grandchildren Scott Hadley (Cozette), Michelle Burlingame (Matthew), Jennifer Chapman (Ray), Michael Lesniak, Kevin Steindorff, Christopher Steindorff (Mary), and Ashley Griffith.  Thelma is also survived by several great grandchildren.

Visitation will be Monday, June 4 at Christ United Methodist Church (8540 US 31, Indianapolis, IN) from
11:00 - 1:00 p.m., with services at 1:00 p.m.  Entombment will be at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens, Greenwood.

Every time I was with Thelma, I remember her gracious smile! She was kind and her family and faith were her life. I know she will be greatly missed by her family but I also firmly believe she is transformed, with God and free of pain. Well done, Good and Faithful Servant.

There’s a special place in all of our hearts for our mothers, just like there’s a special place in every mother’s heart for her children. You must continue to carry her memory in that special place in your heart. I am sincerely sorry for the loss of your mother. I remember your Mom, she's flying high with Rhonda & Gloria. Wishing you love & peace and strength in the days ahead, Tara

Jan,

I met your mom when I was in high school. I thought (still do) that she was one of the coolest women on the planet. Her mild manner, subtle sense of humor and the outright emanation of kindness and goodness that came from her always touched me. Life has been blessed because of her! There is a void tonight that is irreplaceable. My condolences (plural) to you! CB

Thelma was like a grandmother to me and my girls. We lived next door to them for several years. My girls would run over to see them every chance they could. Thelma always had cookies for them and lots of hugs. My heart hurts that she is gone. I am sorry I cannot be there. She was the sweetest and most loving person. We will miss her dearly. Please tell Bernie we love him and are thinking about him.
