Melissa Murphy Obituary

Mrs. Melissa Murphy, of Indianapolis, passed away on the morning of Wednesday, March 27, 2019 at her residence. She was 86. Melissa was born December 18, 1932 in Melotte, Indiana, a daughter of the late Gerald and Edna (Disney) Lind.

Melissa was raised in Kentucky and attended schools there. She graduated from Cumberland High School and came to Indiana to attend St. Vincent Hospital School of Nursing. After graduating from nursing school, Melissa began a long relationship with Community East Hospital, working there as a Registered Nurse for 27 years before retiring in 1995. It was during this time that she met and married the love of her life, Lawrence J. Murphy, on April 28, 1953. She was a member of the Community Hospital Indianapolis (CHI) Retirees group, the Red Hat Society and Southport United Methodist Church.

Melissa was a voracious reader and loved taking walks with her dog, Abby. She enjoyed shopping and she was known for being a strong woman with an equally strong belief system.

Melissa is survived by her children, Lynn Henry, Jan (Eric) Foster, L.J. ‘Chip’ (Ellen) Murphy II and Joe Murphy; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and two on the way; her sister, Geraldine and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in passing by her parents; her husband of 40 years, Lawrence J. Murphy; her siblings, Violet Henry, Charles Lind, Ruby Bays, Kathy Wetherald and Cornelius Lind as well as a niece, Doris Schult.
