Mrs. Iva Ruth Durham-Hendrix, of Beech Grove, passed away on the early morning of Tuesday, August 6, 2019 at Beech Grove Meadows. She was 91. Iva was born March 12, 1928 in Westmoreland, Tennessee, a daughter of the late James Albert and Ninnie Hope (Bentle) Howell.
Iva attended schools in Tennessee and was a graduate of the Westmoreland High School there. She worked as a self-employed hairdresser for many years and in her leisure time she enjoyed crocheting as well as gardening and took pride in raising several varieties of house plants. She was a long-time and faithful member of the Mount Zion General Baptist Church in Indianapolis where she was active in the Women’s Missionary Society. She had also served as secretary and treasurer of the church.
Iva is survived by her daughter, Phyllis (Bill) Lord; her grandchildren, Mike (Tammy) Eaton, Billi Lord, Brandon Durham and Leslie (Brad) Ritter; five great-grandchildren; her stepsons, Donald Hendrix and David Hendrix as well as several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Iva was preceded in passing by her first husband, H. Paul Durham; her second husband, Chester Hendrix and her son, Timothy Paul Durham.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm, Monday, August 12, 2019 at the Singleton Community Mortuary and Memorial Center.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 am, Tuesday, August 13, 2019 at the mortuary. Burial will follow to Forest Lawn memory Gardens in Greenwood.
For those choosing to make a memorial contribution, the family has suggested those be offered to the Mount Zion General Baptist Church of Indianapolis.
