Gene Green

Mr. M. Gene Green, of Greenwood, ran into the arms of Jesus on the late afternoon of Saturday, September 21, 2019. He was 75. He was born November 15, 1943 in Chrisney, Indiana, a son of the late George M. and Mildred I. (Mitchell) Green.

Gene attended Daviess County High School in Owensboro, Kentucky and was a member of the graduating Class of 1961. After coming to Indianapolis, he was employed with Western Electric as a computer operator and while there, he met his future wife, Carol Herndon. Gene and Carol were united in marriage June 5, 1965 and were married for over 54 years. Gene was also previously employed as an insurance agent for a few years and in 1988, Gene felt the Call to the Ministry. He moved his family to Lynchburg, Virginia and enrolled in Liberty University where he earned his Bachelor’s degree. After graduation in 1992, he came back to Indianapolis and was ordained into the Ministry of the Gospel in 1993. He then became Director of the Men’s Division for the Wheeler Mission where he served for 21 years. He also had served as a chaplain at St. Francis Hospital for four years and for the past year had served at the Singleton Community Mortuary and Memorial Center as a funeral assistant. Gene was a member of Emmanuel Church of Greenwood.

Gene was the consummate bass fisherman. He loved spending time on the lake and was instrumental in the formation of the Johnson County Christian Bassmasters. He also enjoyed sports and was a loyal fan of the Indiana Pacers, Indianapolis Colts as well as the Hoosiers of Indiana University and also had coached basketball at Southside Christian School. Gene could also usually be found enjoying his favorite blend of Starbuck’s coffee. Gene was a true Christian gentleman.

He is survived by his loving wife, Carol Green; his sons, Michael Eugene (Gennell) Green and Todd Eric (Kim) Green; his grandchildren, Josh Green, Hannah Green, Micaiah Green, Noah Green and Mazie Green; his great-grandchildren, Amari Green, Ivy Green, Addy Green and Ava McKenzie; his siblings, Nancy (John) Warren and Terry (Kathy) Green as well as several nieces and nephews.

Gene was preceded in passing by his parents.

A Celebration of Life will be conducted at 6:00 pm, Thursday, September 26, 2019 at Emmanuel Church, 1640 W. Stones Crossing Rd., Greenwood with the family receiving friends from 4:00 pm until the hour of service at the church.
