Everett Smith Obituary

Everett Lee Smith, 97, was born on September 21, 1921 in Southport, Indiana to Raymond & Malvina (Clark) Smith.  He was the second of four children, brothers Elmer Smith and Virgil Smith, and sister Lucille (Smith) Charpie.  He attended Southport Grade School and graduated from Southport High School in 1939.

Everett enlisted in the United States Army in September 1942 and honorably served his country in World War II until February 1946.  He was a sergeant in Battery D, 379th Anti-aircraft Battalion protecting the U.S. 9th Army installations.

During the war, he received letters from a friend of his sister, who became the love of his life.  Everett married that girl, Jeanette Anne (Miner) Smith on November 17, 1946.
They had two children, Stephen L. Smith in 1948 and Thomas G. Smith in 1950.

He was a self-employed plasterer contractor and worked for several builders, mainly in the Indianapolis area.  He built his own house on McFarland Road on a plot of ground originally purchased by his great grandfather right after the Civil War.  He raised his family there and resided on that property until he moved to Greenwood Village South in May of 2017.

Everett had a strong faith in God and his Church. He faithfully served and supported the Southport Baptist Church in many capacities including Board of Deacons, Board of Trustees, Building Committee, Finance Committee, and various other committees and work groups.

He enjoyed his church family and his Fellowship Sunday School Class. Many remained friends beyond just Sunday activities for many years.  He enjoyed a church bowling league, golf league, and the very active Keenagers senior group at the church.

He enjoyed family times and dearly loved his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Everett is survived by his sons Stephen Smith (Cathy) and Thomas Smith (Rebecca); five grandchildren, Jana Woodard (Mark), Bradley Smith (Trisha), and Andrew Smith, all of Greenwood, IN, Aaron Smith (Suzann), and Joshua Smith of Morgantown, IN; 14 great grandchildren, Luke, Alyssa, Holly, Pierce, and Phoebe Woodard of Greenwood, IN, Kyla and Corinne Smith of Greenwood, IN, and Zachary, Allison, Noah, Rachel, Emily, Jeremiah, and Lauren Smith of Morgantown, IN.

He is preceded in death by his wife Jeanette Smith, his siblings Elmer Smith, Virgil Smith, and Lucille Charpie, and by his parents Raymond and Malvina Smith.

He will be dearly missed, but we rejoice for him, as he is now with our Lord and Savior, and those who preceded him.

Services for Everett will be at 1:00 p.m. Friday, May 10 2019 at Southport Baptist Church, 2901 East Banta Road. The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. until the hour of service.
