H. Lorraine Yates, age 93, of Indianapolis, peacefully fell asleep in Christ on December 27, 2017 while in Hospice care at The Wellington of Southport. She was born in Westby, WI, on September 25, 1924 to Oscar and Alma Buraäs. She was Baptized and Confirmed in the Christian Faith at the Coon Prairie Norwegian Evangelical Lutheran Congregation, Westby.  She attended a one room rural school up to the Eighth Grade and graduated from Westby High School in 1942. She attended the University of Wisconsin, Madison, for two years. Following World War II, she met Raymond A. Yates at a USO dance at Truax Field in Madison, WI. On September 22, 1950 they were married at the American Lutheran Church in Burbank, CA, while he was working as an engineer for Lockheed Aerospace Corporation. They made their home in California until the early 1960s when they moved to Madison, Wisconsin. Lorraine was a homemaker but also worked for a time at the Wisconsin Public Service Commission, the Jackson Clinic and as Secretary for R.A. Yates & Associates Consulting Engineers, all in Madison. She moved to Indianapolis in 2000 and became a member of Calvary Lutheran Church.

Lorraine is survived by her children: Mark (Barbara “KC”) Yates of Beloit, WI; Scott (Marylynn) Yates of Carlsbad, CA; William (Deborah) Yates of North Beach, MD; six grandchildren: Christopher Yates of Beloit, WI; Joshua (Hallie) Yates of North Little Rock, AR; Matthew (Sarah) Yates of Centreville, VA; Teresa (Daniel) Scott of Indiana, PA; Rachael (Benjamin) Pileggi of Kalamazoo, MI; Kristen Yates of Indianapolis, IN; and three great-grandsons: Cooper Yates, Jacob Yates and Tristan Scott. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Raymond who died in 1999; ten siblings which included two sets of twins, one of which was lost shortly after birth: her brothers, Norman Buros, Carl Buros, Harold (Thelma) Buros, and Irwin (Carol) Buros; sisters, Margaret (Clarence) Anderson, Clarice (Howard) Lord, Alice Mae (Fred) Harvaitt, Adelaide Mae Buros; and her grandson, James W. Yates.

Lorraine was known and loved for her servant’s heart, quick wit and ability to instigate lively conversations and humor. She was well known for her cooking and baking, especially pies, cookies and Norwegian dishes and desserts. Her resiliency and strength live on in her family and grandchildren.

A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 13, 2018 at Calvary Lutheran Church, 6111 Shelby Street, Indianapolis, 46227 with Pastor Kurt Ebert officiating. Burial will take place at a later time in Forest Hill Cemetery, Madison, WI. Family and friends are invited to visit from Noon until the time of the service.
