Thomas Jefferson Hathaway (“Coach”), 79 of Indianapolis, passed away April 22, 2012. He was born July 19, 1932 in Idaville, IN to the late Earl and Hazel McClellan Hathaway. Tom married Carolyn Smitley June 15, 1952, and she survives. He graduated from Indiana Central College 1954 in Education, Indiana University in 1961 with Masters in Science Education and Purdue University in 1965 with Masters in Biology. He taught and coached cross-country and track in Perry Township Schools for 46 years; taught track and field at IUPUI for 5 years; coached and taught at University of Indianapolis for more than 8 years and taught KLA mini and marathon classes for over 30 years. He attended and was an active member at Rosedale Hills United Methodist Church. Tom received numerous awards and honors, including but not limited to the Sagamore of the Wabash. Tom was known as a dedicated and loving husband, father and grandfather, an active coach and marathon runner up to the date of his death. Survivors are wife Carolyn Jane Hathaway; daughters Deborah (John) Konkel, Diana (Rusty) Mink, Denise (Bob) Browne, Darlene (Steve) Maus, Delores (Craig) Waltz; 11 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; brothers George, Marion, Orville and Wayne; sisters Lucille Geisler, Nellie Peters, Jessie Allen and Edna Capper. He was also preceded in death by brothers Robert, Russell, Donald and Richard; sisters Thelma Peters, Ruby Kempf and Faye Eyestone and one great granddaughter. Services 10:30 a.m., Thursday, April 26 at Rosedale Hills United Methodist Church. Visitation 3:00 – 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 25 at Singleton Community Mortuary and Memorial Center and Thursday one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens. Memorial gifts have been suggested to Rosedale Hills United Methodist Church.
